A Weekend at Montage Palmetto Bluff

Restful Stays

In need of a cozy winter escape, I found myself at Montage Palmetto Bluff in Bluffton, South Carolina. We arrived after dark, following a winding road from the gatehouse deeper into the property. Then, almost unexpectedly, the inn appeared ahead of us—a grand white building with classic Southern architecture, standing out against the darkness.

It was the kind of arrival that made you slow down for a moment and take it all in. And it felt like an introduction to what makes Palmetto Bluff so special: a sense of quiet, space, and timeless Southern charm. From the salt air and moss-draped oaks to the unhurried pace of life, the Lowcountry seemed to invite us to leave everything behind for the weekend.

Stepping inside, the lobby made an immediate impression. At the center of the expansive space is a striking compass-rose floor inlay, its intricate pattern stretching across the warm wood floors and drawing the eye to the grand staircase. Crisp white architectural details, sweeping balustrades, antique-inspired furnishings, and an elegant chandelier overhead give the space a distinctly Southern character. It feels grand, but still inviting—a fitting introduction to the relaxed elegance of MontagePalmetto Bluff.

After a warm greeting with sweet tea, we made our way to our room. We stayed in a room at the inn overlooking the serene lagoon. Waiting for us was a welcome treat of bourbon milk jam and benne seed financier—a thoughtful touch after a long drive. I took full advantage of the freestanding tub and ran a hot bath. I slipped into the plush robe and slippers and planned to watch a movie, but the bed was so comfortable that my eyes immediately began to close. It seemed the perfect way to begin a weekend devoted to doing a little less and simply enjoying where we were.

The next morning, I woke up feeling refreshed, and my husband and I made our way down to Octagon, the inn’s main restaurant, for a hearty breakfast. Looking out at the lagoon from the dining room enticed us to explore the property after breakfast.

Montage Palmetto Bluff is part of a sprawling community spanning 20,000 acres, so there was plenty to see. We wandered along tree-lined streets, admiring bucolic cottages nestled among the trees. We crossed numerous wooden trestle bridges as we made our way towards Wilson Village, where the brick-lined road eventually opened to a picturesque Carpenter Gothic chapel overlooking the May River.

The morning was exactly what I had hoped for from a Lowcountry escape—quiet, unhurried, and surrounded by nature. We found ourselves back at Octagon for lunch before afternoon spa treatments. We made our way to the spa and headed to our respective locker rooms. I had some downtime before my massage, so I settled into the lounge with a book beside the fire.

Soon, it was time for my 90-minute “Heart of the Bluff” treatment, and my therapist guided me into a cozy treatment room. I settled onto the warm massage table and instantly felt my shoulders drop. I jokingly told my husband that this massage would fix me—and it certainly did. My therapist worked away months of pent-up stress and the knots that came along with it. I dozed off throughout the massage, only to be gently awakened by a scalp massage and warm towels wrapped around my feet. The treatment ended with reflexology, which I could barely stay awake for. I left feeling refreshed—and indeed, fixed.

By the time my treatment was done, the spa had nearly cleared out. I took advantage of the quiet and went for a dip in the warm pool, alternating between the pool and sauna. Since my hair was full of oil, I decided to shower at the spa before heading back to our room. Even that felt like part of the experience, with eucalyptus shower spray adding a final touch of aromatherapy to the shower.

Almost reluctantly, I finally headed back to our room. Feeling sleepy from our afternoon at the spa, we stayed close by and dined at Octagon—it was the perfect end to the day. The rest of the weekend unfolded at an equally leisurely pace: browsing the shops in Wilson Village, picking up artisan provisions from the nearby market, and lingering in rocking chairs or beside the fire in the Library.

There was something wonderfully easy about the pace of the weekend. At Palmetto Bluff, there never seemed to be any pressure to fill the day; sometimes the best part was simply finding a comfortable place to sit and staying there a while. It was the kind of place that made leaving difficult—and had me already looking forward to our next visit.
