What to Expect During Your Spa Treatment

How to Spa

It's finally time for your treatment. A cozy robe and plush slippers provide comfort as you slip beneath the covers of a warm treatment table. Your jaw unclenches, your shoulders drop, and your mind begins to quiet. For the next 50 to 90 minutes, you drift away as your therapist works their magic. You leave feeling refreshed—lighter than when you arrived.

While spas offer a wide variety of massages and body treatments, the shared intention is always the same: to help you feel better than you did before. Whether your treatment is at a day spa, hotel, or wellness resort, you will be given time to change into something comfortable and begin winding down before your treatment. Shortly before your treatment, you may relax in a lounge area with a cup of tea or water—a subtle signal to your body and mind that it's time to slow down.  Arriving 15-20 minutes early allows you to settle in and fully transition into the experience.

When it's time, your  therapist will guide you to the treatment room and give you a few private moments to disrobe and get comfortable on the table. Use this pause to close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Your therapist will knock before re-entering and begin your treatment, typically face down for massages. They'll ask if there are any areas you'd like to focus on avoid—this is your time, and your treatment can be fully tailored to your needs. If you'd prefer to spend the entire session easing tension in your shoulders and back, that's perfectly normal.

Throughout your treatment, your therapist may check in about the pressure to ensure the comfort. You might want more pressure or less pressure depending on your needs. At some point, they'll gently lift the blanket so you can turn over and lie face up. If you'd like extra privacy or feel more relaxed with your eyes covered, you can always ask—your comfort is the priority. When the treatment comes to an end, your therapist will quietly let you know and step out so you can return to your robe at your own pace.

Take your time getting up from the table. Your therapist will be waiting outside and will guide you back to the lounge, where you're encouraged to continue resting before rejoining the world.

There’s no right or wrong way to experience a spa treatment—only your way. Whether it’s your first visit or one of many, listen to your body, communicate your needs, and give yourself permission to slow down. From the moment you arrive to the moment you leave, each treatment is an invitation to rest, reset, and step back into your day feeling restored.
